I dont seem to have any of my pictures from carnival vista on this tablet, but I often book the 1A port hole cabins on carnival as a solo. Gotta be a heavy job lifting the big portlights if they''ve got top-hinged covers - and a finger-risking job lowering them 😩

Yes, I've always thought of the covers as being top-hinged. Yes, I appreciate the need for blackouts ahead of the bridge, I see that on all ships in the Solent, much the same as trains, buses, etc. I don't see forward-facing cabins under the bridge as being 'forward of the bridge', even though the front of the superstructure and/or the bulkheads might be slanted. Not entirely accurate of course, but this land-lubber treats 'forward of the bridge' as being the same as where the hull starts to curve inward significantly. Carnival's cove balcony cabins have closures for the balcony door as well, IIRC. Typically, they are hinged above the port light, and held up with a hook. Some of the large port lights are square, some round, and they will have deadlights. In the hull, cabins forward of the bridge are typically crew cabins, but corridor layout isn't a problem. Most forward facing cabins in the superstructure are increasingly forward of the bridge, the lower you go on decks (slanted forward bulkhead), so they will shine light up and around to hinder night vision.
